An Interior Lovers Guide To: Milos

Welcome to Milos! A Greek island that for us is incomparible to others. Wherever you are there are panoramic views of the Aegean sea boasting crystal clear waters and stunning beaches. If you’re looking for a place to unwind and read a book, relax on the beach all day and enjoy fantastic seafood, Milos is a must go to stop on your Greek adventure. We’d recommend 4 days there and in this Milos travel guide have broken these down into a tried & tested itinerary as well as restaurant and bar recommendations. All photography is from my own trip so hope you enjoy it!

Recommended Itinerary

DAY IDEA 1:

Head to Sarakiniko aka the moon beach for a unique sea experience. It has scenic cliffs of white rock, like something out of a star wars film and has a small beach space with no tide and shallow clear water. Then head to Medusa for lunch a great seafood restaurant spot with lovely ocean views – expect to queue as it’s a popular spot!

In the afternoon evening, head to Utopia cafe for unobstructed and break taking views of the sunset, followed by an exploration of the old town or as it’s called ‘Plaka’. Have a walk up to the Castle, try local bars and end with dinner at Bariello, a romantic open air dinner spot with a real focus on fine dining.

DAY IDEA 2:

Start with a morning hike or drive to the old Sulphur Mines, an eerie derelict spot. They were abandoned overnight back in the 60s and it feels like walking into a portal back in time. We would recommend going there early (9-10 am), before the tourist tour boats arrive as the experience is so much stronger if no one else is there. Bear in mind that if you have a car you will have to stop before and walk for about 30mn to access it as the road are not car friendly. It should be fine with a quad.

For lunch head to Psaravolada Restaurant and then end with a beach session on Trisgrado in the afternoon. On the way home, by not stop off for a cocktail at Akri bar for a sundowner.

DAY 3 IDEA:

Get up early and head to Fyriplaka beach which can get quite busy and then hop over to Sirocco for a late lunch where they cook fish in volcanic heated sand (they take you to watch how they bury it and cook it!). End the day on Paleochori Beach or Agia Kyriaki Beach for the afternoon. Mooch back to Plaka for dinner & sunset at the Church where crowds congregate to enjoy the view. Enjoy an aperol spritz as the sun sets!

DAY 4 IDEA:

A history day today. Walk amongst the catacombs & old theatre and learn about the history of Milos. Then head to a quaint fishing village called Klima for a coffee and look into how the locals live. End at Plathiena beach for the afternoon & get a drink at Plathiena Foodies Beach Bar.

DAY 5 IDEA:

Head to Pollonia to explore little town & fishing village and go to Kivotos Ton Gefeseon for a pastry sweet treat & coffee. Get the ferry across to Kimolos a different island to switch things up for the day as a ferry is 20 minutes and costs less than 10 euros.

Bars & Restaurants

In Milos, dinner is still a bustling activity late into the evening and people eat anytime from 7 – 11pm. You can expect people still to be walking in at 11pm for a late night meal. The below suggestions are all tried and tested and are higlights from my trip…

Restaurants:

Bakalikon Galanis – My favourite restaurant as it’s away from the main touristic areas and filled with locals. Prices are really cheap and food and vibe was fantastic! Authentic and retro decor really adds to the experience.

Avli Milos – a nice restuarant in the centre of the Plaka, a great people watching spot with authentically Greek food

Astakas Cafe – great sundowner spot

Nostos Seafood  & Mikros Apoplous – good seafood spots with nice views

Sicorcco – amazing fine dining experience

Bariello – stunning views, extremely romantic and high end food

Utopia cafe – Breathtaking sunset views you won’t find anywhere else, great for a cocktail

I hope these recommendations bring you as much joy as they have on my various trips to this island. For more travel guides check out our guides on Paris, Copenhagen, Athens & New York
