Lighting is an often-overlooked aspect of interior design, but it can have a big impact on the look, feel, and functionality of a space. A well-designed lighting scheme can make a room look more inviting & comfortable. But, where do you start?
Well, don’t worry, we have got you covered! In this guide, we’ll share with you some simple tips for perfect lighting your home
Tip 1: A multi layered scheme
A multi-layered lighting scheme is simply using a combination of different types of lighting that work together. By combining light sources, you’ll create a balanced and dynamic lighting solution. It typically includes ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.
- Ambient lighting provides the overall illumination for a room and sets the mood. This type of lighting is usually provided by ceiling fixtures, such as chandeliers or recessed lights.
- Task lighting is designed to help with specific tasks, such as reading or cooking. This type of lighting can be provided by table lamps, floor lamps, or under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen.
- Accent lighting is used to highlight key features in a room, such as artwork or architectural features. This type of lighting can be provided by wall-mounted sconces, track lighting, or spotlighting.
By combining these three types of lighting, it’s possible to create a well-balanced lighting scheme. This way you can ensure it meets the functional needs of a space and enhances its overall aesthetic.
Tip 2: Warmer light & Kelvin scale
Once you’ve chosen your light, you need to then consider the type of bulb too. This will have a great impact on how it lights up the space. Warm light is undoubtedly more inviting and cozy than cool light, so consider using soft and warm-toned lightbulbs. This is especially important on light sources like wall sconce’s or table lamps – anywhere you want an atmospheric glow. The ideal warm light can be achieved through the use of incandescent or LED lights with a warm colour temperature. Bulbs with around 2700K (K stands for ‘kelvin’) are ideal for cosy evening glows. Err away from bulbs with a 4000-5000K brightness, as this is a very cold in appearance light (think a dental practice!). For a great more in depth article on the Kelvin scale, see here.
Tip 3: Dimmable lighting for your home
Dimmable lighting is a great way to create a moody atmosphere as it allows you to adjust the light levels to suit the mood you want to create. This can be especially effective in the evening when you want to create a more intimate and relaxed vibe.
Tip 4: Highlight textured surfaces
Highlighting textured surfaces, such as a brick wall or a rough-hewn wooden beam, can add depth and interest to a space, and help to create a more intimate and moody vibe. Use accent lighting to draw attention to these textures and make them the focal point of a room.
