The Dream Kids Room

We’re thrilled to pull back the curtain on this delightful kids room transformation in our client Annie’s home. Designed to be a haven for her young one’s, this space is all about imagination, fun and functionality. A room where playtime adventures come to life, sleepovers turn into lifelong memories and creativity runs wild.

Project Overview

The room itself had so much potential from the start, with its tall ceilings, charming original architectural features, and a large, light-filled window. It just needed a fresh perspective to unlock its magic! Whilst it was a blank canvas, there was one clear brief instruction from Annie – it had to have an imaginative bunk bed for her two boys. Uncover how we achieved this as we detail it all below…

The main element for this space is the epic bunk bed we designed bespoke, complete with cupboard storage, book shelving, wood slat panelling for safety, and a set of stairs leading up to the bed cleverly positioned around the radiator cover and cosy dimmable LED lighting. We chose a mix of materials and colours for this joinery, including space themed wallpaper, oak woods and a mix of pale and deep blues for depth. This use of various materials ensured the bed didn’t feel too overpowering in the room which naturally wasn’t huge, and instead feels like it belongs.

Elsewhere in the space, we added in softer touches to counteract the harder bunk bed materials. For example, we kept the soft neutral carpet (to ease on costs but made sure to give it a deep clean to bring it back to life), a striped roman blind, and blankets, bean bags & cushions with textures like boucle for a cosy feel.

We had previously worked with this client on the ground and lower floors in her home, so we knew the property and client well which always helps. We began by working through several iterations of the furniture layout and bunk-bed design as these were the foundation of the room.

During this phase we ensured that we were proposing a design to the client that included useful storage for the kids, made best use of the tall ceilings and natural recesses of the room (e.g. shelves in the alcove).

Our team’s priority was also ensuring the bed would be safe for little children to be using, so we came up with this open panelling idea that runs up to the ceiling.

The subsequent design stages are where we always need the client’s input and attention the most. It can be quite time consuming for clients as it requires rounds of revisions, meetings on site, discussions & so forth. But we typically start with a ‘concept’ – this is the framework for the design where the client can see key items like bedding, roman blind fabrics, chairs, beds etc. From here, after a few tweaks, we develop 3D photorealistic renders of the space to help the client visualise our designs before committing to them. These are really crucial in helping the client imagine the space and give them the confidence to bring our ideas to life. As you can see, the 3D renders vs. the real life pictures are almost identical!

The build itself took approximately 12 weeks (but this included a bathroom renovation upstairs and an entire 4 floor hallway refresh and external works). The renovation went smoothly, as every detail was planned out and we worked alongside our contractor to bring the vision to life – this entailed us creating elevations, electrical plans and a tight logistical schedule of works. Our weekly site visits ensured seamless communication with tradespeople, and ensured that if any problems arose, we could swiftly sort them – for example, the vanity unit for the bathroom turned up by the supplier in the wrong colour! But we swiftly sorted this.

The transformation of the children’s room went beyond what anyone imagined. It is now a delightful, versatile space that will grow effortlessly alongside the kids for years to come. Every corner has been designed with the utmost attention and the two boys have given us their seal of approval! The bespoke bed, a true centerpiece of the room, has become an instant favourite with both the children and our client, offering not just a cosy spot to sleep, but also a touch of playful elegance. The smiles and excitement from Annie and her little ones are proof that this project was a resounding success!
