This months homeware brand alert feature puts the spotlight on ‘Urbansize‘, a brand catered towards us small space dwellers. It all began in 2015 when owner Sallie decided to trade in corporate life as a city lawyer for something more creative and fulfilling. Motivated by an inability to find small but stylish furniture for her cosy Greenwich flat, she decided to take matters into her own hands and began making and selling ‘urbansized’ bedside tables on Etsy. The floating bedside table range sold out immediately which encouraged her to design more furniture that worked for small spaces. It’s no suprise that Urbansize continues to grow organically due to the demand for it’s multi-pupose and space saving designs – they’ve even recently launched their very own website! So we chatted to Sallie from Urbansize about her mission to create stylish furniture to fit into small spaces. Once you’re done, check out last months too.

What is Urbansize?

Urbansize is a homeware brand that brings you unique scandi style furniture to fit into a small living space. From wall mounted furniture (think floating bedside tables and wall hung desks) to furniture that fulfils a dual purpose, we specialise in designing furniture to make living in a small space that bit easier. We also have a range of gorgeous accessories like lamps and cushions that complements our furniture line.

How would you define the brand’s style?

Simple! Clean lines and modern silhouettes is the design ethos for Urbansize. Everything has to be beautiful but also highly practical. I’m definitely really influenced by Scandinavian style and favour a light bright look. I also love natural raw wood so I’m using that a lot at the moment and luckily, it’s really feeding into the trend for natural home products.

What made you want to start the brand?

It was mostly down to the frustration of not being able to find quality and attractive furniture that fitted into a smaller home. I had a small flat in Southeast London and I was determined to make it beautiful and unique but all of the furniture I saw on the market whether it was on the high street or high end seemed like it had been made for a country mansion. I ended up either making my own pieces or hacking other pieces to make it fit into my space.

This led to friends and family asking me to make similar pieces for them and I realised that actually, there were so many other people with the same issue. I don’t even think the problem is limited to people who live in small apartments, everyone has that small or awkward corner of their home where they just can’t quite make something fit. And so Urbansize was born.

What is your most popular product?

The floating bedside table is our signature product and people seem to just love it. I think it is because it solves a problem that a lot of people have i.e. limited space next to a bed but needing to have somewhere to put your book and tea! Our larger size is also really popular because even if you have a little bit more room it just gives a feeling of space and light that you just can’t achieve with a traditional bedside.

If you could only own one homeware item, what would it be and why?

A cosy wool throw. It’s so versatile and you can transform virtually any space by adding a throw. There are these amazing alpaca wool ones from The Wool Company that are so soft it’s amazing but for a more budget friendly option I love Zara throws.
