The Style Files No. 25Aye, it's a goodun! Modern, colourful, industrial design in the heart of Scotland
We’ve been excited all week to show you this Style Files House Tour. Meet Neil and Will, the savvy couple who renovated their 1890 Victorian villa in the heart of Scotland and transformed it into a light-flooded modern home. They live in ‘The Maine House’ with their son Hugo and their Boston Terrier, but the home is too good not to share – so they rent it out on Air BnB too! Holiday in Scotland anyone?
Anyway, as you embark on their house tour you’ll notice there’s a beautiful flow of space between the rooms, while the design is kept exciting with unexpected pops of colour. We interviewed Neil to see how they did it…

“I wanted continuity throughout but i’m not afraid of pattern or colour”
What’s the inspiration behind your home?
Was there a design process behind your home?
I’m lucky that i can envision something so I set about creating mood boards for every aspect of the house. I wanted continuity throughout but i’m not afraid of pattern or colour. I’ve a strong personal taste and we had collected bits and pieces from various travels to NZ, Asia and USA – that said we were pretty much starting from nothing. The kitchen was to be german style with clean lines but i was able to find a Scottish company to create one to my specifications.
What’s your best advice for creating a home like yours?
Don’t be afraid of colour or pattern. Just go for it! Its your home – don’t be deterred because you worry what others may think. I actually prefer it when people saying ‘i would never think of that’ or ‘i could never do that’ as it shows your home is unique to you and thats whats most important.
