It’s been two weeks since we hosted our first ever interior workshops and guess what…they were so much fun!! Firstly a big thank you to Cuckooz who let us host in their amazing East London apartment and also to the awesome brands who donated stuff for our goodie bags. From having really engaged attendees, to conquering our fear of speaking in front of people, to Athina and I finally getting to catch up on non-work-related life stuff over spare Prosecco and a very late night pizza takeaway (shout out to Basilico), everything went smoothly. Tucked away on a corner of Commercial Road in Aldgate East, we were smack bang in the City of London. Cuckooz kindly loaned us a two bed, two-storey flat that had been designed by 2LG in head-to-toe Habitat, so of course it was looking pretty snazzy. No 2LG flat is complete without a design element that’s quite ‘out there’. Our apartment had a really cool graphics-y feature wall that worked perfectly as our backdrop (see pic). Some people sat on the sofa and others at the table while Athina and I perched, so it was like having a chat about interiors with your friends in your living room. Speaking of chatting, what did we actually talk about?

WHAT
I’ll make it quick as possible because how un-fun is a blow by blow account plus that’ll just spoil it if you want to come to the next one. SO…
First things first we made our workshop attendees a cuppa and had a chat as they arrived and got to know each other. Some had travelled from Birmingham while others had just hopped on a tube from South London. Turns out SEVEN people came from my hometown of Bromley, so we complained about mundane suburban life for a while!
Anyway, first Athina and I gave an overview of the four most important areas of interior design: Colour, Spatial Planning, Fabrics and Lighting, and gave our top tips on how to use each in your home.

Next it was time to whip out the Prosecco + snacks while people whipped out their photos and floor plans of any rooms they wanted to improve. Most had just moved into a new home or were redesigning their current one. We got into groups and gave each other honest advice on their current décor (this is the point where you find out your beloved piece of furniture doesn’t quite fit in with your room).
Lastly we moved onto Sketchup. This was where we showed people how to draw basic 2D to-scale floor plans and furniture, 3D shapes, and how to import ready-made furniture from the 3D warehouse (if this is going over your head because you haven’t used sketch up, sorry. If it sounds like your kind of thang get in touch – we’ll be running some SketchUp focused workshops)!
It was SO rewarding to see our attendees starting to draw the floor plans of their home and manoeuvring furniture around! A couple of people managed to finish a basic 3D vector of an entire room which was so impressive and definitely nothing to do with the top up of Prosecco.

Before it was time to say goodbye / sprain some arms as they attempt to lift a goodie bag, we decided to do a little competition. Athina asked each group if they remembered a vital piece of information on fabrics that she had mentioned earlier (Athina is fabric pro by the way). The first to answer received a prize, which ranged from beautiful Att Pynta candles to a book on the Great Interior Design Challenge!

So last – but by Jove not least – I must mention the goodie bags. Firstly, just have to say a huge thank you to all the brands who donated so many things. Topology has come such a long way over the past year and we were really thrilled that brands believed in us and were happy to donate products to us FOR FREE for our first series of workshops.
