1. How would you define your style?
If I had to sum up my style, I’d say it was “eclectic modern retro”. I love colour and pattern and seem to be a magpie to all things tropical. Particularly if they feature a pineapple or palm trees! I’ve loved both for a while, long before they were on trend, and tropical patterns just seem to make me smile. As does anything gold, copper or leopard print! My husband and I also have a keen interest in 1960’s interiors and we have some treasured retro furniture and homeware. We really like to mix retro with modern, which is something you’ll see in every room.
2. What was the biggest challenge when decorating your home?
To banish the bland! All of the rooms were painted in magnolia and there was brown carpet in the hall and on the stairs. We knew as soon as we saw it, they both had to go! There was also a lot of pine on the window frames and skirting and the kitchen was a red/brown wood – both of which we felt looked really dated. Fortunately we didn’t have to do any structural work and it was largely just decorating. We lived elsewhere for 6-weeks whilst we painted, ripped the carpet up and sanded the hallway floorboards. It was definitely a good move before we moved all of our belongings in.
3. Where do you find your inspiration?
I’m guessing like a lot of us interior lovers, largely scrolling Instagram and Pinterest. I’ve found some amazing houses on Instagram and made friends with some fellow interior bloggers in the process! I run a hashtag #decorstylefiles on my Instagram @dottysdecor and showcase one house that I love every Wednesday. That’s a great way of finding fabulous homes to Insta-snoop at!
4. What’s your favourite spot in the home and why?
Oooh that’s a tough one! Probably the living room as we love spending a cosy evening in there with the log burner roaring away in front of Netflix. The log burner is actually my husband’s favourite thing in the house! It’s a lovely bright room and the mixture of blue, grey and yellow creates a really warm and inviting space. It also features one of my favourite retro items – our beautiful teak sideboard.
5. What’s your favourite interior shop & why?
I LOVE interior shopping so this makes it impossible for me to just pick one! I am going to give you a few of the stores I go back to time and time again. H&M Home – for brilliant home accessories, George – always great for cushions and often have some fab tropical patterned items. MADE.COM – affordable but super stylish furniture and lighting and they have really good sales! Debenhams – I love the Matthew Williamson collection (I’m a bit obsessed with his wallpaper too!). Sainsbury’s – always have great items and I can never go there without buying something from their homeware aisles! The Vintage Emporium in Stockport – a treasure trove of vintage homeware. I bought my brass bar cart in our living room from here and my mum also has a stall there. And the shop I wish I could afford to buy more from…House of Hackney. I would happily have EVERYTHING in our home!
