Our Workshops With MADE.COM

When MADE.com asked us if we could somehow help celebrate and promote the launch of TalentLAB, we said yes instantly. But what would we do? Well, for whose of you who don’t know, TalentLAB is an amazing new crowdfunded platform set up to give anyone the opportunity to  design furniture with the aim of getting it manufactured. So it made perfect sense that we should teach people how to draw 3D furniture not only to scale, but from scratch on a sharable software that’s free to download. This way they could upload it to TalentLAB too. So we brainstormed and came up with the idea of a workshop and chucked in some epic goodie bags and lots of prosecco.  If you’re wanting to know how it all turned out and whether you can come along to the next ones, keep on reading.

To kick off the workshop there was a brief introduction on TalentLAB explaining how it all works. It really is a great concept that MADE.COM have come up with – we love the idea that literally anyone can draw a piece of furniture from just an idea in their head and it could potentially become a money making product. Amy and I then gave a short intro on how to get to grips with the software and allowed the workshoppers to play around with each button. Not long after that, it was time for a prossecco break with nibbles (of course). We scoffed mini bagels, cupcakes, and pastries – and that’s ok because January’s detox was non existent anyways.

With our bellies full, we continued teaching our wonderful group and we started actually draw 3D furniture. We found the best way to do this is by showing examples of furniture and getting the group to draw them from scratch. This gave each user a good understanding on how to draw legs, handles, table tops, domes etc – all useful for when they start to design their own! It was amazing at how, after just two hours, everyone was really getting the hang of the software.

With their new found skills, they now have 3 weeks to upload a furniture design to instagram with the hashtag #MADETALENLAB to win a £50 MADE.com voucher! So keep your eyes peeled for some great designs!

By ther end of the class, we’d realised we’d overrun by 10 minutes because everyone was having so much fun exploring the architectural software. So reluctantly, we brought the class to an end and said our goodbyes. All in all it was a great workshop and we owe a big thank you to everyone who came and especially to MADE.com for allowing us to host in their beautiful showroom and for providing fantastic refreshments and goodiebags!
