Our Experience Of Winning A Blog Award!and how to deal with a serious wardrobe malfunction when you accept it
And the ‘Best Interior Designer Blog’ goes to….Topology! We’ve won?…YES we WON! We leapt out of our seats, practically falling down the stairs as we rushed to accept our award. Creative director of Amara, Sam Hood, stands there with our award on stage – along with the BBC’s ‘Great Interior Design Challenge’ presenters Sophie Robinson and Daniel Hopwood. This is terrifying but equally exciting. Oh god I just had that awkward moment when you go in for two kisses and they go in for one. Oh shit, Athina’s dress has ripped. Pictures are taken and in a blur we’re ushered out of the auditorium so we can jump around and shout with excitement..
To give you a bit of background info on why this was such a huge achievement for us, two years ago, a lady came into the furniture retailer where I (Athina) was working and asked if I could vote for her blog. ‘Vote for what’, I asked. ‘To win an Amara blog award’ she told me as if I should have known. And I should have done. I looked up the Amara Blog Awards and gained insight into great blogs like Sarah Akwisombe and Swoonworthy. It was here, I thought; ‘Hey I want to try and win this too’. So I set up the Topology blog and from there it’s always been a goal of mine. I am thrilled to now say I can knock it off the list.

Last year we were shortlisted but didn’t win the award and we weren’t surprised. We were up against amazing people and our blog was really shoddy to be honest. We had about 12 page views a day and the content was poor. With some hard work, a proper camera and some great collaborations with brands and homeowners, we’re now reaching 20K + monthly page views and thought we might be in with a chance. I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to win. It’s so rewarding to be recognised. Those of you wishing you could win an award, or thinking about trying to, my advice is simply – go. for . it.

To give you a bit of insight into the night itself, it was filled with industry professionals from journalists, to designers to homeware brands and of course the bloggers you’d instantly recognise. To name a few Lisa Dawson Styling, Pink House, Design 69, Grillo Designs, Love Home Blog and more..It was an amazing place to socialise meet all one’s peers in your chosen field. Everyone is so friendly, so kind and so welcoming.
Oh and if you’re wondering about what I’m referring to when I say I had a ‘wardrobe malfunction’. Well, just before we arrived, my jumpsuit decided to rip. So as I collected the award I had to keep my right arm next to my hip to hide my pants and thigh from showing. Oh…it got so much worse though. By the end of the night, I ended up with a tear from my chest down to my crotch! Needless to say Asos are giving me a refund. Big thanks to Amy for colouring my thigh in black eyeliner in an attempt to hide it!
Just a glimpse of ONE of the rips my brand new outfit endured. See my awkward photo below where I’m using my purse to cover up the rip in my crotch..!
Of course the night and the experience as a whole would not be possible without Amara. They’ve created an incredible event and opportunity for so many people. What an amazing platform for creatives to boost themselves and get the credit they deserve. A huge round of applause is deserved for Sam and her team. Thank you Amara!!
We’ve been inundated with congratulatory words and support for our blog and we honestly think this is the beginning of an upward journey for Topology. Since the award we’ve lined up an exciting collaboration which we can announce next year, and have been featured in the Sunday Times, Telegraph & The Times. To those of you who’ve been reading our blog since day one, we thank you for you support and motivation to keep going!
